The featured work on the program was Norman Dello Joio's "Colonial Variants," commissioned for the Bicentennial Celebration of the Declaration of Independence and repeated to standing ovations at each concert. After the final concert on May 29th, Maestro Eugene Ormandy led the Philadelphia Orchestra in an encore--a performance of the Waltz Sequence from Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier." ]
